The show brings together the work of four emerging artists, Joy Gerrard
(London, Dublin), Lilah Fowler (London), Ricardo Alcaide (London, Sao Paulo)
and David Leddy (Glasgow,) and explores the boundaries between art and
architecture, as well as the aesthetic, social and political aspects of
urban and domestic space.
Joy Gerrard, explores how destructive forces; such as hurricanes, great
floods of water or biblical forces, move through urban spaces. Through
massive (2 x 3 metres) aerial format drawings, which show crowds forming to
mourn / protest, she asks the viewer to reflect on the politics of
congregation and dispersal in today’s urban spaces. She has also produced
five major site-specific public works in Ireland and the UK. Gerrard is
currently studying for a PhD at the Royal College of Art in London.
Lilah Fowler, re-casts elements of the urban landscape (such a scaffolding)
in different contexts, playing with elements of scale, materials and
location, in order to make the viewer consciously re-engage with the
relationship between their own physical space and the surrounding walls,
floor and ceiling. Fowler graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2005
and is now studying an MFA at the Royal College of Art in London.
Ricardo Alcaide, uses photography and sculpture to explore a variety of
social / political issues. In his recent work, Alcaide has taken close ups
of homeless people from a previous London based project, and has used their
skin to create vast billboard images in Sao Paulo. He has also used these
images to create modernist architectural buildings / sculptures out of human
skin.
David Leddy is a playwright and performer based in Glasgow, Scotland. He has
been described as 'the rising star of Scottish Theatre' by The Observer and
a ‘theatrical maverick’ by the Financial Times. Recent work include The
Auricula Series, a series of site-specific audio works that are listened to
on headphones in particular locations. Leddy will be creating a unique audio
piece especially for this show. |
